Account Manager Job Responsibilities
What does an Account Manager do?
An Account Manager's main responsibility is to maintain and further develop the customer relationships with their assigned accounts in their territory. Account Managers will upsell these customers on additional and new products, services, or solutions.
More specifically, Account Managers are responsible for these parts of the sales cycle:
- Customer Success - Keep the customer happy
- Expansion - Upsell and Cross-sell the customer into new and larger contracts
Account Managers are usually handed off customers who just signed a deal with their Account Executive counterpart. Account Managers might also have a dedicated Customer Success teammate who they work with as well as sales engineers and subject matter experts.
Like Account Executives, when an Account Manager closes an expansion or renewal deal, they are typically paid a commission. This percentage varies widely by company, deal size, location, and compensation plan.
The top Account Manager skills include: customer-obsessed, strategic thinking, and strong communication.
Account Manager vs. Account Executive
Account Managers typically work with existing customers and focus on maintaining that relationship while also renewing existing contracts and upselling the customer onto new or larger quantities of products. Account Executives, on the other hand, typically hunt for brand new clients who are not already customers of your company. Because Account Managers usually only work with warm leads, they are paid a higher base salary than Account Executives but have a lower commission earning potential.
